Whispers of…

Elder Mediation

Mediation is the process of guiding people through sensitive, emotional discussions in a respectful and impartial environment. A mediator ensures that all parties have the opportunity to express themselves while maintaining an objective and neutral stance. The mediator does not take sides or offer personal opinions; their role is simply to create a safe space for your conversation to unfold.

Elder mediation focuses on issues affecting elderly individuals, offering a space where all parties can express their concerns and perspectives. The mediator’s role is to facilitate the discussion, ensuring everyone is heard and helping the meeting to flow smoothly, while allowing decision making to remain with the parties involved.

Mediation Services

At present, I am continuing my education in both mediation and elder mediation through various courses. I have completed the Elder Mediation course with Family Mediation Canada (FMC) and participated in a series of role-playing sessions with FMC.

Although I am not yet certified to mediate professionally, I am more than willing to assist in discussions, providing guidance to help conversations move forward in an impartial and safe environment.

FAQ’s

  • As a doula, I would need to have a preliminary interview with each party that will be present in order to understand everyone’s perspective. Prior to the meeting, it would be helpful to have your thoughts and concerns written down, even if you just jot down some abbreviated notes.

  • Hopefully, what happens at this meeting is that some positive dialogue is exchanged to help each party understand the other’s point of view. It’s possible it may take several meetings to land on a decision that all are satisfied with; sometimes small steps are favourable to larger, shakier ones.

  • There is zero tolerance at these meetings for any name calling or negative comments. It’s very important to let each person have their say without interruption. If the discussion becomes too heated, we’ll take a break or reconvene when everyone has calmed down.
